Yep, I called it, but was just a little ahead of the national awareness curve. In an recent post I wondered out loud why the cell phone companies were trying to shove
movies and songs onto my phone when I just wanted better quality service and reception.
Seems many of you felt the same way, according to the recent survey by the Forum to Advance the Mobile Experience. A snippet of it is below, click the link for the full article, very educational:
NEW YORK — Ever get frustrated because you can’t figure out how to use all the features on your cellphone? You’re not alone.
Manufacturers have become so enamored of cool features — including cameras, recording devices and video-streaming capabilities — that they have lost sight of the fact that many consumers just want good voice reception, according to a survey by the Forum to Advance the Mobile Experience (FAME).

There’s a downside to an all-in-one unit of any type and it was drilled into my head very early by my father. He was an audiophile and in the mid-70’s the music stereo industry was starting to churn out “entertainment centers” that were no longer composed of the modular units of receiver, turntable, 8-track(!) and radio. Now they were packaging them all into one unit and hooking speakers up to it.
My father, bless his heart, took the time to explain to me, in painstaking detail (thereby providing an early education in proving one assertions) how when you merge the components into a single space, you must make sacrifices in sound quality and component lifespan due to space restrictions and the heat generated by each component operating in a smaller space.
Same with turning a tiny cellphone into a MP3 and movie player. The designers and engineers made significant sacrifices and compromises to make that happen and I guarantee you that quality of voice reception and signal strength were first on the chopping block.
Btw, which are you in favor of — turning your phone into a a movie player with a 3 inch screen or better service and reception?
