Global Warming’s Stunning Admission - The ROI Of Marketing Backfires

Ok . . . I hate to pound on the global warming version espoused by the “An Inconvenient Truth” crowd (‘it’s the humans fault!‘). I really Walter Terry's ROI Copywriting -- just facts, no theoriesdo. I feel a twinge of pity that they thought it was going to be such a cakewalk, they failed to perform due diligence and make sure all the facts were solidly grounded and connected to each other.

But the marketing of this has me enthralled, like road accidents are for some people — they don’t want to look, but the splash of red and the blue and white lights draw their gaze like Sirens draw sailors to the rocks. Walter Terry will break you out of the bad advertising trance

So too am I hypnotized by watching “carbon offsets” and “carbon neutrality” become the new religious absolution for the folks with the biggest “carbon footprints.” See, they don’t have to actually change the way they pollute the atmosphere, they can now buy their way out of it with “carbon offsets.”

How convenient. Didn’t we see an episode of “The Sopranos” where Tony sought absolution from his crimes by buying the local church a new wing?

Pop references aside, I like it that both sides of the debate are getting aired more. Then last week, the following stunning admission came at last. Did you see in on the network news channels? No, you did not. I highlighted it below:

According to the scientists in the movie, there is an intolerance of dissent on global warming. Official government sanction of global warming opened the floodgates of funding to climate researchers, who previously worked in obscurity.

NASA scientist Roy Spencer says in the program that climate scientists need for there to be problems to get more funding. IPCC contributor John Christy says of climate scientists, “We have a vested interest in creating panic because money with then flow to climate scientists.” University of London biogeographer Philip Stott says that “If the global warming virago collapses, there will be an awful lot of people out of jobs.”

There you have it, folks. Always follow the money.

And recent items I’ve posted here reinforce the responsible scientific community’s POV. It’s also a “rouges gallery” of shoddy, irresponsible and alarmist marketing.

Two facts all sides agree on:

    1. There is excess gunk in the air

    2. We should do everything we can to clean the gunk from the air.

Everything else is subject to interpretation — as we’ve seen.

What do you think about all this? Did you go to the theaters to see “An Inconvenient Truth”? Rent the DVD? Are you following the debate on both sides? Are you discovering that now, rather than cheering when Gore talks about the sacrifices he wants you to make — are you now wondering about how he stands to profit from your sacrifices?

Are you now becoming more aware of the marketing of a POV is almost more important than the actual facts?
