Be More Effective - Strike These Words From Your Vocabulary

“Consultant.” Doesn’t just hearing the word or seeing it print just put you to sleep and conjure images of Hire is not a bad word to get ROI Copywritingpaying a lot of money for obvious advice? Too much cultural baggage with this one.

“Needless to say . . .” and then they go right ahead and tell you what they told you there wasn’t any point in telling you. Ever noticed that?

“I’ll try .. .” It’s impossible to try to do something. You either do it or you don’t. Don’t believe me? Fine, do this little experiment and you can prove for yourself.

Place a pen on the table or desk in front of you.

    Good.

Now try to pick it up.

    One of 3 things happened. You  . . .

1.) Picked it up (in which case you failed. You were not supposed to pick it up, you were supposed to try to do so).

2.) You didn’t pick it up (again you failed the test, you are supposed to try to pick it up! What you have done is not pick it up - ehhhtttt).

3.) Your hand is still hovering over the pen — not picking it up and not sure what to do next. That is the true nature of “to try.” It means you can’t be counted on to do it at all, and who wants to be known for that?

What are your personal pet peeve words that mean nothing? Send ‘em in and if they’re good, I’ll try to post them <grin>. No really — I will. Just having fun with the language.
