Heisenberg Fridays* - Vegan Hypocrisy: The New Edible Chauvinism

Are vegans hypocrites? I’ve been wondering lately if the vegan thought process isn’t more than a bit ROI Copy fills your coffers with the right kind of green.hypocritical. I was thinking about this the other day and wanted to run it by you. It’s a radical thought that’ll stir-fry vegan neurons.

What if whatever created and intelligently designed life on earth, put the plants and animals there to serve humans, hmmm? To “serve” in this case would be to assist us in our evolution, in all meanings of that phrase.

I’m not asking you to believe anything or change your beliefs because this is just a thought-experiment. So . . .

Lettuce pause for a moment and consider this carefully.

It could be true. Conversely, it also may not be true. But as far as I know, there’s no evidence either way. Given that there’s no surmounting evidence either way, then you may as well choose the belief that produces the most positive outcome, right?

I mean, one whey or another, it beets not doing anything, which is just vine by me. That’s my philosophy.

Since it’s been proven scientifically that plants experience pleasure and pain in much the same way animals do (documented in the research papers that were later turned into the book The Secret Life of Plants). And since we can measure pain and pleasure responses in plants, then it stands to reason that they, too deserve a watchdog group, right?  Stamp out unethical copy with ROI Copy!

Which is why I want to know, why is there a PUTA (People For The Unethical Treatment of Animals), but not for plants? And yes, I know it’s actually PETA — but their hypocrisy and scare tactics nets them the “PUTA” tag which is a double because it says something else in another language, comprende?

And PETA/PUTA is that, as well.

We could call our new plant watchdog group PETP (People For The Ethical Treatment of Plants).

If it seems ridiculous, then I have to ask you why that is. Is it because the “blood” of plants is a different color? Is it because they don’t express pain in a way that humans can register (without instruments)?

Can it be that if the blood isn’t red and the plants don’t scream (but measuring instruments have “heard” them nonetheless), then it’s less messy to the self-rationalizing egos? The sap in plants, trees, heck even the “juice” in carrot juice — it is plant blood, is it not?

Frankly, I want to see vegans quit self-righteously supporting PETA/PUTA/whatever and create a cause célèbre for plants. That would be a congruent thought process I can follow. Walter's copywriting - no flip-flopping and

I think I understand their quandary, though. If my assertions are correct then, my god — they have to eat something substantial and they wouldn’t look like such anemic waifs!

And so I suppose it’s easier on delicate psyches and egos to choose the quiet victims to chomp down on while pretending to be champions of the fuzzy, warm-blooded variety. That way when the “slice and dice” their Julian fries, they can’t hear the screams.

In the unlikely event PETP was created, then I wonder how long before we started seeing PETP members throwing orange and green paint on vegans munching bean sprouts at the local hippie health food store?

It’s a funny, poetic justice type thought and of course it will never happen — but the irony hangs thick in the air, nonetheless.

P.S. - Now, you probably fig-ure this isn’t berry funny at all and think I’m a blooming idiot who’s sprouting off, that’s okay because many dew.

Perhaps you’d prefer I just leaf the vegans alone and quit stalk-ing them because they haven’t got thyme for this nonsense.

At this point even I wish I could stop, but I just cane help it.

    * = About Heisenberg Fridays. Each Friday’s post will be the one post where I can talk about whatever I want outside of the realms of marketing, sales, advertising or copywriting. More often than not, it will be about one of my favorite studies –  the research into quantum mechanics and how consciousness influences reality.

So for most of the week you’ll be certain of the overall theme of my posts, but each Friday there will be that uncertainty about the topic. Thus my tip of the hat to Werner Heisenberg the creator of quantum mechanics’ Uncertainty Principle.

Comparing Animals & Plants is all fine & good.

But just because, excuse me ‘Plants have feelings too’ (?)
Dosent mean we shouldnt try to get better welfare for animals.
Thats an idiotic thing to say & as a grown man, you should be over such immature thinking.
Vegans cant eat nothing can they? atleast they’re trying to get rights for people without any voices.

      Walter responds:

Alice you obviously missed the tongue-in-cheek tone of the piece. And you’ll have to show me where I claimed that plants have feelings too. But that, and getting better welfare for animals are two different matters and not connected.

      > Dosent mean we shouldnt try to get better welfare for animals.

We have enough people on welfare, I don’t think the country can afford to have animals on the public dole, as well. Yes, that was a funny.

      > Vegans cant eat nothing can they?

I was merely highlighting the inherent hypocrisy in the vegan mindset and it is beyond the scope of the piece (and my interest) to solve vegan dietary issues.

      > atleast they’re trying to get rights for people without any voices.

That was certainly a non sequitur! What does that have to do with anything else you wrote? Or are you wanting to say vegans are the only ones trying to get rights for mute folks?

      > Thats an idiotic thing to say & as a grown man, you should be over such immature thinking.

Idiotic . . . immature . . . according to whom? You? Got any facts to back up those judgments or do you just prefer to hurl insults for anyone disagreeing with you? You wouldn’t be a vegan by any chance, would you?

Next time you would be best served by choosing a single talking point and sticking with it.

While it is an interesting argument, I will have to agree with Alice in that just because plants are still being eaten doesn’t mean animals should be too.

You’re kinda throwing insults too by calling all vegans hypocrites, and that is not backed by much anyway. Vegan by definition is someone who omits any animal products from their diet, so by eating plants we’re not going against any of out beliefs. It is true that, for example, I choose to be vegan because I am morally against the murder and unethical treatment of other beings, and if what you say is true then it should apply for plants too, but I do try my hardest to save any lives I can and I feel offended that you would call me a hypocrite for being unable to save plants and survive.

I haven’t done much research on plant receptors, but I’d think any pain and pleasure receptors would be automatic system reactions by the plant, seeing as they only have a basic nervous system.

Don’t want to throw any insults either, but I personally believe that to think the entire world and all beings in it were made to serve humans is a bit arrogant; in that case, maybe the world was created to serve fish or any other animal. You are right that there’s no real way to know if it is or isn’t, but fact is, it’s completely possible to live without harming other life (excluding plants), and I think that is better than eating animals on the chance that “maybe that’s what they’re for anyway”.
