Do You Have The Most Dangerous Job in Business?

If you’re the CMO, that itch you feel between your shoulder blades is the targeting crosshairs and the CEO’s (or the Board’s) finger on the trigger. You’re on the Endangered Species list and there’s no environmental group to save you.

You’re in the middle of “The Most Dangerous Game” and you’re the quarry in the company blame game.

Fast Company labeled the position of Chief Marketing Officer “the most dangerous job in business” and I believe it.

Every quarter I have to update my Rolodex as marketing directors, managers and marketing departments change more quickly that John Kerry’s mind and Bunny Ranch panties.

Whether you are a CMO, have one or function as one as part of your job, you need to read this and apply it. It’s the groundswell of coming changes.

Greg Welch, author of the survey and an accompanying report, observes, “Clearly, every departure has its own story.” But the new reality is that CMO jobs are incredibly perilous. Today’s marketing chiefs are shape-shifting beasts who grasp not only advertising and promotions but also public relations, IT, finance, manufacturing, customer service, and branding across global markets. “It has more strategic importance than ever before,” Welch says.
