    How Saddam Hussein Can Make You A Better Entrepreneur*

    Amazing the difference a dead, brutal dictator can make to companies worldwide. Nice to know thatSales copy that won't leave you hanging -- Walter Terry's ROI Copywriting in death he can serve a higher purpose than he ever did in life.

    So, what can Saddam Hussein teach you about running your business more effectively, and how did that same lesson turn dictator Muammar Qaddafi overnight into a role model for the Libyan Boy Scouts?

    Even if you’re marginally curious, then you’ll want to soak up Robert Ringer’s recent article in one of the few newsletters I read everyday — Early To Rise.

    Here’s a favorite clip from Ringer’s article. I often disagree with his opinionate conclusions (ironic, I know) but here, on this issue and this issue only — I think he’s dead-on (pun intended).

    And to balance it out and not to leave you hanging (heh), you should also project into the future the wild-assed success version and then weigh the possible outcomes of each best-case and worst-case scenario.*

    “Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way to avoid making The Big Mistake, but a method that I find works very well is what I refer to as “looking backward from the future.” Here’s how it works:

    1. Project yourself into the future before you act.
    2. Picture the worst possible consequences of your actions.
    3. Pretend to look over your shoulder from the future - at where you are today.
    4. If Step 2 is much worse than what you see in Step 3, you would be wise to rethink your plans. Put another way, if you’re not prepared to live with the worst-possible consequences of your contemplated action, take a pass.”

    So . . . some lesson, eh? It’s always good to not wait too late to take action. Like waiting ’til you’re at the end of your rope — that’s too late. Waiting until you’re at the end of a swinging rope, even worse.

    * = how that looks:

    2. Picture the best, most optimal possible consequences of your actions.
    3. Pretend to look over your shoulder from the future - at where you are today.
    4. If Step 2 is much better than what you see in Step 3, you would be wise to take different actions. Put another way, if you’re not prepared to live with wild-assed success of your contemplated action, take a pass.
