Global Warming Hypocrisy - Seattle Style

Should we listen to anyone telling us he wants “Reduce Seattle’s dependence on cars” but who also enjoys mayorgridlocka daily taxpayer-funded, chauffeur-driven limo ride to and from his home?

Hey, forget that you may not live in Seattle. I bet you have one of these hypocritical “eco-warrior” wannabes governing your city right now.

If not the mayor, then definitely the majority of the city council.

Apparently, Seattle Mayor Nickels has taken a page from Gore’s do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do playbook and has jumped on the finger-wagging, global-warming bandwagon in hopes of positioning himself as an “eco-warrior.”

This “eco-warrior, ” more concerned with his legacy than his here-and-now, has since January 2005, burned through 152.1 gallons of gasoline a month — the equivalent of 5 gallons of gasoline every single day of the year.

Hey Al, what’s the carbon footprint here?

Am I being too hard on people of his ilk: those who try to lead by talk and not by actions? I’ve been told I should give them special consideration because of “the importance of their mission.”

Yet I struggle with this because, if their “mission” was really that important — wouldn’t they already be doing what they wagging their fingers at us to do?

    But Wait, There’s More . . .

And it’s not just the gas, it’s the bucks as well. Nickels, in the last 12 months, has spent roughly $36,000 of taxpayer money on the leasing, the maintenance, the fuel and other operating costs for his various luxury cars. We’re not even factoring into that the chauffeur’s salary and benefits.

“Seattle is launching a public awareness campaign to educate individuals on how to reduce greenhouse emissions and slow global warming, Mayor Greg Nickels said this morning.”

But here’s where the hypocrisy comes into play . . .

“The city also suggests … commuting to work without a car and going car-free for a week or more.”

    Source: Seattle Times

If “the city” suggests “commuting to work without a car” and “going car-free for a week or more,” then how about Nickels going 100 mile per day chauffeured limo ride-free for a week, and then we’ll talk? Or for god’s sakes, at least use a Prius or some type of hybrid!

Are you getting as fed-up with this do-as-I-say-not as I do hypocrisy as I am?

When did self-awareness fade to such a degree that these wingnuts feel snug and secure in getting up in front of people with wagging fingers and telling them how they should live, and yet, not feel obligated to first lead by example?

    Grrrrrr . . .

Tip of the hat to the good folks at Sound Politics for the heads-up on this.
