Diamonds Are A Scientist’s Best Friend*

This is what science is all about folks, suggesting a theory and then examining the evidence to find  olddiamondswhether you can prove or disprove it.

When I was in high school geology (I was really paying attention because I wanted to be a paleontologist when I grew up), the popular scientific belief according to the best evidence was that

the earth was approximately 4.6 billion years old and that it took another half billion years for solid materials to form.

    Ehhht. Wrong.

Australian geologists discovered some diamonds that are 4.25 billion years old.

So there goes another precious gem (pun intended) out the window.

So before you decide to cement your world view, it might be helpful to take a step back and remember this recent example, in a long line of examples, of how what were once-cherished beliefs people argued and fought over, might be soon proven to not be correct after all.

It’s Fun to Know: The World’s Oldest Diamonds

“Australian geologists recently discovered the world’s oldest known diamonds. The 4.25 billion-year-old gemstones, which don’t have any commercial value and aren’t destined for any engagement rings, are already providing researchers with lots of new information about the formation and early geological history of Earth. One previous theory that no longer holds up posited that the planet formed 4.5 billion years ago and the surface was made of molten lava for more than 500 million years thereafter.”

    * = About Heisenberg Fridays. Each Friday I post about whatever I want outside of the realms of marketing, sales, advertising or copywriting. More often than not, it will be about one of my favorite studies –  the research into quantum mechanics and how consciousness influences reality.

So while most of the week you’ll be certain of the overall theme of my posts, each Friday you will experience uncertainty about the topic, which is my tip of the hat to Werner Heisenberg the creator of quantum mechanics’ Uncertainty Principle.
