How To Trick Your Mind Into Writing & Finishing That Book!

Debuting a new category tonight — “Client Top Secret.”*  snoopy-typing-small2

Now if you’re a client or have been one, don’t sweat it — I’m not giving away the REALLY juicy stuff you paid top-dollar for, that would hardly be fair and we both can agree on that.

Even so, for the rest, the information this category will make you beaucoup bucks by giving you the tools and mindset to be successful with your sales copy and/or your marketing strategy . . . providing you apply them and do so correctly.

First up tonight are some killer money-makers I sent to

an author who had been stalled on finishing his book for over a year . . . let me know what you think, okay?

“I emphasized with your struggle to finish your book and I’ve found some tools and resources that may be beneficial, based on my experiences and those of clients, mentors and etc who have struggled with the same issues.

In a somewhat random fashion, here goes . . .

    BLOOKS

Have you considered using a blog as a way to “trick” your writer’s mind into writing the full book? Commonly called a “blook,” (a book serialized on a blog site. Chapters are published one by one as blog posts, and readers can then subscribe to a blook with an RSS feed, tag it, comment on it, etc.).

This article has more info: “From The Blog To The Book.” Even though the article is from 2005, it still applies today (even more so). That’s what I had in my archives, but Google probably has even more examples.

    WRITING TOOL

A tool you may find helpful for the planning, writing and marketing of your book is Mindjet’s MindManager software. It is excellent for creating structure and planning of all aspects from conception to running your post-publishing marketing plan.

You can see more at Mindjet. I’ve used it for years and plan everything from my blog’s editorial calendar, client editorial calendars in addition to running all my companies from one central map. They have a free 21 day trial of this core application.

I wrote this quick email to you during a Mindjet webinar by Roger Parker called “Using MindManager to Plan, Write, Promote, and Profit from a Book” and the recording should be up on their site in a day or two. Here’s the link to one of his sites: http://publishedandprofitable.com/ .

    BOOK MARKETING & PROMOTION

You may or may not know this, but even if you get picked up by a publishing house, you’ll still have to do your own promoting, and your sales with reflect your ability to do this.

To that end, it would be useful to consider using a blog to promote the book whileyou’re writing it (dual purpose of the blog by using the blook strategy mentioned above).

Plus, a good strategy is to set up a website lead generation page (commonly called a “squeeze page”) to build your in-house email list for your email marketing campaign and for the newsletter you would want to send out.

You should also consider what else you can sell and package with your book — e.g., info-products, ebook-bundled videos, workshops, audiobook, etc.

Some potential good initial content for your blog would be any research material you’ve come across, but don’t intend to include in the book — just chop those up into separate posts of approximately 250-400 words.

Btw, since authors are basically responsible for all the promotion of their books, it makes more sense to self-publish/print-on-demand instead of getting swallowed by a huge publishing conglomerate that will not treat you like they treat the NYT bestseller authors.”

    * = On a related, but separate note, there’s a new link to my Contact Form on the top nav bar. Did you see that one? Drop me a line and tell me what’s on your mind.
